My Journey in Cosmetology

Before enrolling at Western Beauty Institute I had a lot of questions in my mind. I asked myself- is this the right career for me? Is this something I can see myself doing for the rest of my life? How will I know that I will always enjoy doing this career? In December 2015 I decided to stop asking myself “what if” and took the steps necessary to get my cosmetology license and do what I love to do! I put all the fear behind me and enrolled at Western Beauty Institute.

Within my first week of school I knew I had made the right choice- the beauty industry was definitely meant for me. I will never forget on my first day of class. In my opinion it was very challenging because I had to do my first ever haircut! I was very scared but with my teachers’ positivity and impressed attitude it gave me the confidence to continue getting it perfect (and eventually I did).  I will also never forget my first color theory class. I immediately absorbed the material and realized on that day that after I pass my cosmetology exam and become licensed my new goal is to become a colorist. I fell in love with the transformation of it all. For me, it was almost as if the hair was a canvas and I was creating a new piece of art. After finishing a color service and seeing the clients’ vision-and my vision- become a reality, that is what really makes me feel so accomplished and pushes me to further my education and continue what I’m doing.

Cosmetology school has brought out my creative side. I love the idea of getting paid to create and have fun, all while feeling like you are helping someone. The outcome is seriously so rewarding. So far I have put in about seven hundred hours towards the sixteen hundred hours that I need to do in order to take my exam. I cannot wait to finish, pass my exam, and then go on to do great things with my license! The drive, dedication, and love that I have for doing hair ensures my place in this industry and I can’t wait to see what is in store for me.
