Tracy Smith was looking for a convenient way to make some extra money when she spoke with her hairdresser, Linda. “You know what I’m hearing? Esthetician,” Linda told her.

To be honest, I didn’t know what an esthetician was, and I couldn’t even spell it. But I thought, ‘I am going to look into that.’ The very next day, I started looking on the Internet. I saw Western Beauty Institute and the other school here in Lancaster. But I liked what I saw in WBI, it was attractive to me. I toured WBI’s Lancaster campus and the admissions counselor explained the program to me. I was surprised it would only take six months. I decided that this would be a wonderful opportunity so I signed up the next week.

An important factor behind my decision to attend WBI was that classes were available in the evening. I was working full time, so if WBI didn’t have the night school, I would not have been able to go. The other school didn’t offer that. Despite the tiring six-day routine of both work and school during the six month course, I never gave up because I loved it so much. I used to get a little frustrated was when I was studying the science part of it. And then I would just say, ‘I can do this.’ And I did!

Like most other WBI grads, I took the State Board exam right away, never doubting that I would pass because of the extensive preparation I received at WBI. Sure I was nervous, but I was actually very familiar with the format because the area where the state board preparation class is set up much like State Board.

Shortly after getting my license I opened my own business at Salon ’Xclusive in 2011. Using a combination of flyers, business cards, and word of mouth among her coworkers to promote it, I held a gala Grand Opening. A lot of people came, and I even ended up working on some clients. Mostly I’m advertising by word of mouth. I also hand out my business cards and I talk to people. I’ve had people tell me they’ve never had a facial. And I tell them, ‘Guess what? Before I started the school, I never had a facial either.’ When I went to the school, I had a facial. I was able to experience it and I loved it! Doing it to someone else they always fall asleep, and that makes me feel good and lets me know I’m doing something right.

Tracy’s Advice

“Esthetics is a good field, I love it. I really enjoy it, and I am glad I did it. I see myself going really big with it. Go to Western Beauty Institute and at least talk to the people there to see your options.”
